What Is Alt Text and Why Does It Matter for SEO and Accessibility?
Alt text (alternative text) is the written description inside an <img> tag. It does two critical things: screen readers read it aloud for visually impaired users, and Google uses it as the primary signal to index and rank your images. Missing or poor alt text means lost Google Image Search traffic, lower Lighthouse accessibility scores, and potential WCAG 2.1 compliance failures. Our free AI alt text generator goes further than any text-only tool — you can upload your actual image and let the AI look at it directly, or type a description if you prefer. Choose from five specialised styles (Descriptive, SEO-Focused, Short & Simple, E-commerce, Technical/Docs), get up to three variations to compare, and copy a ready-to-paste HTML snippet — all in under 10 seconds, no account needed.
How to Use the AI Alt Text Generator
- 1
Choose your input method
Switch between Describe Image (type what the image shows) and Upload Image (let the AI analyse the actual file). The upload mode supports JPG, PNG, WebP, and GIF.
- 2
Pick a style
Choose the output format that matches your goal — Descriptive for accessibility-first content, SEO-Focused for higher Google Images rankings, Short & Simple for breadcrumbs or thumbnails, E-commerce for product listings, or Technical/Docs for UI screenshots.
- 3
Add page context (optional)
Enter the topic of the page where the image lives (e.g. "organic skincare products"). This lets the AI weave relevant keywords into the alt text naturally.
- 4
Generate or get 3 Variations
Click Generate Alt Text for a single best result, or 3 Variations to get three options to compare side-by-side. The colour-coded character bar shows whether you are within the recommended 125-character limit.
- 5
Copy and paste
Click Copy next to your preferred result, or Copy the HTML snippet ready for your img tag. Your recent generations are saved in the history panel and can be exported as a CSV.
Alt Text Best Practices
Be specific — describe the actual scene, not just the subject.
Stay under 125 characters — screen readers often truncate longer text.
Include keywords that genuinely relate to the image and page topic.
Mention text visible in the image (banners, labels, signs).
Do not start with "Image of" or "Picture of" — screen readers say that automatically.
Do not keyword-stuff — it reads as spam to both users and Google.
Do not leave alt blank on informational images — only for purely decorative ones.
Do not repeat the caption word-for-word if a visible caption already exists.
Alt Text Examples: Bad vs Good
Bad — filename used as alt text
<img src="DSC_0489.jpg" alt="DSC_0489" />Mediocre — too vague
<img src="photo.jpg" alt="woman working" />Good — Descriptive style
<img src="photo.jpg" alt="Woman in red blazer presenting bar charts on a large screen in a sunlit boardroom" />Good — SEO-Focused style
<img src="photo.jpg" alt="Remote team collaboration — professional woman reviewing project analytics dashboard" />Why This AI Alt Text Generator Stands Out

How Alt Text Improves SEO Rankings
Google confirms that alt text is the most important on-page signal for ranking in Google Image Search. When a user searches for a product, place, or concept, Google cross-references page text, file names, and alt attributes to decide which images to surface. A page with well-written alt texts is far more likely to appear in both regular and image search results than an identical page with empty or generic alt text.
- →Alt text is the primary ranking signal for Google Image Search, which drives a significant share of image-related queries.
- →Poorly written alt text is flagged in Core Web Vitals accessibility checks, which indirectly affect overall ranking.
- →Alt text reinforces the semantic theme of the page, helping all keywords rank — not just image results.
- →For e-commerce sites, optimised product image alt text is directly linked to Google Shopping impression share.
